Stout Spiked Bloody Marys at Gas Monkey - Dallas
Dallas. Home of America’s team, JR, the Zapruder film, and Big Tex! What else do you need for the perfect happy hour in Texas? How about kicking it into Overdrive!
On a recent venture into little New York (Texan for Dallas), I stopped at the Gas Monkey Bar & Grill. Yes, the same one of Fast N’ Loud Discovery Channel fame. I was wearing my trade-mark cowboy hat, which hasn’t been seen in Dallas since JR was shot. But, that didn’t deter this Urban Cowboy from pursuing the locally famous “Overdrive” bloody mary.
At first glance, the Overdrive is not overwhelming. With the bamboo skewer of lemons, limes, olives, and candied bacon, it could pass for any traditional bloody. The rim of the glass glazed with celery salt and garnished with a stalk of celery, is pretty much status quo. It is not until you stir…wait…stir...wait…stir and sip, that you taste the magic of the secret ingredient.
The Overdrive bloody mary is a twisted novel of Tito’s Vodka, Zing Zang Bloody Mary Mix, and Guinness Stout. That’s right, beer, dark beer. Yes, it is teetering on the line of bloody and michelada. But, what sets this masterpiece apart is its fabulous sneak effect. Not only do you get the benefit of an excellent vodka, but the following shot of Guinness Stout brings to close a perfect collaboration of “liquor to beer” tranquility. There is a sweetness in the initial sip that causes confusion in the brain. Is it the candied bacon? Is it the vodka? Is it a memory of what might have been? Whatever it is, you want more!
Why go: Peppered Bacon Guacamole & chips, atmosphere, and the Overdrive, $8.50
